Motyw "I (♥) nazwa miasta" został opatentowany w Nowym Jorku w 1977 roku.  Był on częścią kampanii promującej turystykę w mieście. Od tego czasu został zapożyczony i przejęty chyba przez wszystkie miejsca na świecie. Gdziekolwiek nie pójdziemy, możemy natknąć się na serduszkowe wyznania miłości do miejscowości.
